Is this the beginning of the turbo wars?
In a bold move, BRP has taken back the Horsepower King crown from Polaris with its new 2015 Can-Am Maverick X ds Turbo. Could this be the beginning of the turbo wars in the Sport Side-by-Side segment? We certainly hope so!
“BRP is once again taking the industry by storm with the introduction of another industry-first, the new turbocharged Can-Am Maverick X ds side-by-side vehicle,” says Chris Dawson, vice-president and general manager, Global Sales and Consumer Experience division. “The Can-Am Maverick X ds model brings pure performance to a whole new level, positioning BRP as the new benchmark in the industry.”
The Can-Am Maverick X ds ($22,099) boasts industry-leading power with the new 121-hp Rotax 1000R turbocharged option. According to BRP, it provides 10% more horsepower and almost 40% more torque than the Polaris RZR XP 1000. As well, the electronically controlled wastegate automatically adjusts boost pressure, meaning drivers have access to the full 121 horsepower at altitudes up to 5,000 feet.
To keep the turbocharged engine breathing clean air, a large Donaldson air box has been placed close to the engine. BRP says the air box and filter is made for high airflow capabilities to meet the engine’s demand for clean air.
The CVT system was reconfigured to better handle the extra power of the turbocharged engine. It benefits from a redesigned driven pulley with a new Quick Response System (QRS) and an improved drive pulley. BRP says the new design reduces friction for longer belt life and improved cooling.
BRP’s Torsional Trailing A-arms (TTA) rear suspension system has been completely redesign for dune and desert applications, now offering a generous 16 inches of travel. The front end has also been redesigned to allow for 15 inches of travel.
The rear end doles out 16 inches of suspension travel.Controlling the action in the rear are Can-Am exclusive FOX 2.5 Podium RC2 Piggyback Shocks, featuring Dual-Speed Compression (DSC), rebound and dual-rate spring with infinite preload adjustments. BRP says a position-sensitive Bottom-Out Control and a spring crossover allow for less compression damping at ride-height to improve comfort and traction while giving huge damping at the end of the stroke. An aluminum body and reservoir are designed to improve heat dissipation for less fade and reduced weight. The 7/8-in. shaft gives the rear shocks additional strength and buckling resistance to handle demanding conditions.
The front shocks feature a 5/8-in. shaft, 2.5-in. aluminum body and 2-in. aluminum reservoir. They also offer adjustable dual-rate spring preload, Dual Speed Compression (DSC) adjuster and rebound adjuster for custom settings. The large-diameter bore allows for greater damping force capability, while allowing the shock to run at lower overall temperatures, offer less fade and more consistent damping.
FOX 2.5 Podium RC2 Piggyback Shocks are found on all four corners.BRP has also given the Maverick X ds family a revised frame, including a modified rear subframe, center rail and a few tweaks to the front end. The result is a 3.7-inch longer 88-inch wheelbase.
Bringing the 121-horsepower Maverick X ds Turbo to a stop are 220mm disc brakes with 32mm twin-piston calipers up front and 214mm and 32mm single-piston calipers in the rear.

New 14-inch beadlock wheels are designed to keep the big 28-inch six-ply Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires securely on the wheel. BRP says the system makes it nearly impossible for the tire bead to break loose during heavy acceleration or cornering.
Finally, the Maverick X ds Turbo features a lightweight aluminum front bumper, inspired from Can-Am desert racing efforts.
We can’t wait to get behind the wheel of this new dune monster!
