Honda issues major ATV recall

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. of Torrance Calif. has recalled about 40,000 ATVs due to a problem with the throttle.

Honda’s 2007 TRX 500, which was manufactured in the United States, is the vehicle in question.

The recall was made because water can enter the throttle position sensor and freeze. This can cause permanent damage if the rider forces the throttle lever and may result in the throttle sticking open. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, this poses a risk of injury or death to riders.

As of the time of the recall, Honda had received two reported incidents of the throttle sticking, but neither involved injuries.

The TRX 500 is also known as the Honda Foreman and Foreman Rubicon. It is an adult-sized ATV and is designed to be driven by riders who are at least 16-years-old. The 2007 models are available in red, black, blue, olive and camouflage.

Sold by Honda dealers from June 2006 through December 2007 for between $6,500 and $7,600, the vehicles can be identified by the model name, which is printed on the side panel just below the seat.

Registered owners of the recalled ATVs have been send direct notice of the recall. Consumers should immediately stop using the vehicles and contact any Honda ATV dealer to schedule a free repair.
