More affordable General opens up Sport-Utility UTV to more people
The Polaris General has been a force in the Sport-Utility UTV class since its introduction a few years back. But UTVs are expensive and the General has been no exception. Polaris is trying to get more off-roaders into the General family by releasing a more affordable new model – the 2020 Polaris General Sport.
Carrying an MSRP of $15,999, the Polaris General Sport is far from what we’d call inexpensive, but it is $800 less than the current base General 1000 and has slightly better features. The two models share the same 100-horsepower ProStar 1000 engine and most everything else, but the new Polaris General Sport gets upgraded 12-inch aluminum wheels (stamped steel on the General 1000), color-matched shock springs, and new Avalanche Grey color. The Polaris General Sport will begin arriving at Polaris dealerships in April.

“The GENERAL 1000 Sport makes off-road adventure more accessible with a new starting price while delivering more value with enhanced features,” said Steve Menneto, president Off Road at Polaris.
Other features on the 2020 Polaris General Sport include class-leading 12.25 inches of front suspension travel, 13.2 inches of rear suspension travel, 12 inches of ground clearance, bolstered bucket seats, standard half doors, 600-pound dumping cargo box, and 1500-pound towing capacity.
What Happened to the Base Polaris General 1000?
With the new Polaris General Sport coming in $800 less than the base General 1000 and having improved features, you might be wondering what is happening with that model. Well, we asked Polaris and were told that the brand will no longer be producing the base General 1000. You can still purchase one while inventory is available. In fact, Polaris tells us the pricing will be reduced and an additional rebate will be offered for this trim, so it will end up being slightly less expensive than the Polaris General Sport…while supplies last.
