Unless you want to pay out of pocket for damage done to your ATV in an accident, get collision coverage
ATV insurance can be pretty confusing (not to mention dry and boring to boot). You ask your buddies about it and everyone has a different option on the matter. There are many different components to it – there’s collision, property damage liability coverage, bodily injury liability coverage, comprehensive physical damage coverage… and that’s just to name some of the coverages.
We’re going to take a closer look at the collision portion of the ATV insurance policy. Basically, this covers you should any collision damage happen to your ATV. The damage could occur if you collide with another ATV, car, trailer or any other kind of vehicle. It also covers your ATV should you crash into an object such as a telephone pole, a fence or a building. But be aware: let’s just say you take a header into a friend’s house with your ATV. Things like the bent frame, axle, and shattered plastic of your ATV would be covered by collision coverage, but you are responsible for the damage to the house (unless you have property damage coverage, but we’ll take a closer look at that in another article).
Why Collision Coverage
You might not think that it’s necessary to have this type of coverage, but think about having to replace or repair your ATV. Sometimes the bills can climb into the thousands of dollars… and don’t get us started about having to replace a totalled ATV. Do you have the cash to pay out of pocket? We think it’s a lot easier (and cost effective) to pay for an ATV collision policy.
When talking about collision coverage with your powersports broker, be sure to talk about the deductible. The deductible is the amount you choose to pay upfront (if any) before the ATV insurance policy pays. The higher the deductible you choose, the lower the collision coverage cost. If you go with the $500 deductible and the repairs to your ATV are $800, you’ll have to pay $500 and the ATV insurance company would shell out the other $300.
Since policies differ depending on where you live, talk to an expert who covers your state or province before deciding on the coverage that best suits your ATV needs.
